Next-Generation X-ray Technology for Healthy Air

As a four-year-old ESG Tech and Hardware startup, aweXome Ray works on a sustainable green vision; making the world a more safer and cleaner place. The company achieves this through its innovative carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber-based, green X-ray technologies, the recipient of 14 U.S. and eight overseas patents.

Leveraging its novel tech stack, aweXome Ray commercialized an electrostatic, precipitator-type air purifier/ sterilizer. Airxome, its flagship equipment for smart air purification and sterilization, can be installed in closed spaces such as buildings, factories, and even mobilities without requiring extra installation space. Unlike traditional air purifiers, Airxome can purify and sterilize the air simultaneously without generating ozone. It uses extreme ultraviolet light (EUV) to photo-ionize the pollutants in the air, a technology that has gained significance amid worries over particulate pollution and floating bacteria and viruses, such as COVID-19.

The efficiency and effectiveness of Airxome was officially proven by Korean Testing Certification Insititute (KTC) and Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), which are the official testing certification institutes in South Korea. Airxome succeeded in eliminating fine dust in 10 minutes and airborne viruses and bacteria in three hours from a confined space.

Competing against several prominent tech giants, the company was named as ASEAN regional final winner and global finalist at the 2021 eXtreme Tech Challenge (XTC), the world’s largest UN-led startup contest.

“Our competitors’ air purification and sterilization solutions rely on high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, carbon filters, and Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) filters,” says Mr. Gihm Se Hoon, Founder and CEO of aweXome Ray. “That’s where we are different, as our equipment can significantly reduce the level of air pollutants without using any filters.”

Fundamentally, Airxome operates via photoionization. As airborne bacteria and viruses enter Airxome, its digital tubes generate EUV that polarizes the contaminants. As a result, they are partially inactivated and destroyed. This is followed by collection of the polarized particles. These charging and catchment phases enable Airxome to significantly reduce fine dust, airborne bacteria, and viruses. In one instance, aweXome Ray installed Airxome in a Kids Zone @ D.Camp, located at a large-sized building in Seoul. Particulate matter was at about 30, Airxome reduced it to 5, showcasing the solution’s efficacy.

What separates aweXome Ray is its focus on producing trending elements for tech startups in Korea—unique materials and parts, in particular. For example, CNT Fiber is a Material with both electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. aweXome Ray is capable of continuously producing it via direct-spinning method. Infinite applicability is another huge strength of the company. aweXome Ray is enlarging its scope to cover not only purification of air, but also sterilization of seawater, maintenance of freshness in agri-food storage warehouse, and various imaging solutions as well.

Although aweXome Ray has just started generating revenue from 2H 2020, the company marked a major milestone when it completed installing its products inside a mega-sized building in Seoul during the year. Technologically, the company focuses on diversifying the applicability of CNT fiber and and digital X-Ray tubes at the same time.
