Tuberculosis (TB) remains a potentially fatal disease among people living with HIV (PLHIV). The 2020 Global TB Report shows PLHIV are 18 times more likely to develop active TB. However, almost every moderate or advanced case of tuberculosis passes through a curable stage. Treating latent TB infection can prevent the disease altogether. The challenge lies in its early diagnosis, hampered due to prolonged test time, decreased sensitivity and specificity of biomarkers, and inaccuracy of diagnosis results.

Glory Biotechnologies Corp., an innovative research and development company, has developed a new diagnostics system, GBTsol Immune Cell Analyzer (ICA), that leverages leading-edge white blood cell separation technology for the early detection of latent TB, AIDS, sepsis, and other infectious diseases.

The company is built on the vast product development and business development experience of Stephen Sung, CEO of Glory Biotechnologies, who majored in biology. His experience in diagnostic reagents and equipment, business development, and multiple exchanges with researchers from other countries helped him shape Glory Biotechnologies.

Glory Biotechnologies’ innovative technology rests on uncovering a simple principle of our immune system. When the human body is infected with a disease due to bacteria or viruses, certain clusters of differentiation (CD) markers or biomarkers in the blood change to fight the disease. Glory Biotechnologies has found a way to commercialize a solution that can recognize and apply these specific biomarkers to its diagnostics system.

The system collects blood samples from a patient’s fingertips and measures the number of white blood cell surface proteins to check for specific biomarkers, the degree of infection, and the prognosis of immune recovery with treatment. CD4, for instance, is a specific immune protein on the white blood cell surface that HIV attacks, weakening the immune system and resulting in various infectious diseases and malignant tumors. CD4 protein change in immune cells, T cells, is a major biomarker for HIV infection and AIDS diagnosis.

In addition to providing faster and more accurate results at a much lower diagnostic cost, it shows the change in immune cell numbers as treatment progresses to analyze if an individual’s immunity is being restored.

Its research and development team is developing a multiplexbased, automated diagnostics system for large-capacity sample inspection. They also plan to develop and provide semi-automation and automatic systems suitable for multiple medical environments like point-of-care tests (POCTs) and general hospital mass tests. These systems will facilitate remote testing, improve inpatient workflows, assist in public health screening for early disease detection, and add quality to hospital care.

Currently, there is no continuous research and development of immune cells and infectious diseases, and Glory Biotechnologies is making an immeasurable contribution to the medical diagnostic environment. Various trials and errors have made GBTsol ICA a new frontier in the early diagnosis of nearly-incurable infectious diseases, and the firm is committed to continue on its streak.
